Abstract

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a large-scale development initiative through which China seeks to promote economic cooperation, regional connectivity, and infrastructure development. The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a major component of the BRI. This study examines the role of CPEC in Pakistan’s economic growth, with particular focus on three key areas: infrastructure development, employment generation, and energy production. It also explores the major challenges that hinder the effective implementation of CPEC projects, including political instability, governance issues, security threats, financial and debt-related concerns, environmental challenges, and implementation delays. The study is based on a qualitative analysis of academic articles, books, and policy reports and highlights both the opportunities and challenges associated with CPEC. The findings indicate that CPEC has made significant contributions to economic and infrastructure development in Pakistan. However, effective governance, financial sustainability, enhanced security, and inclusive development policies remain essential for ensuring the long-term and sustainable economic impact of CPEC in Pakistan.
