Ports play a critical role in global trade infrastructure, however they are also a significant source of GHG emissions, energy use as well as marine environmental damage. The shift towards “green ports” has become a strategy to lessen the ecological footprint and enhance the efficiency of port operations by incorporating renewable energy sources, sustainable water management, and climate-resilient infrastructure. The role of traditional ports in becoming sustainable, maritime hubs will be discussed and the implementation of renewable energy technologies, including solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, offshore wind, shore-side electricity and clean energy storage, will be outlined. Furthermore, it examines the management of water port in sustainable use of wastewater treatment, ballast water control, rain water harvesting, desalination technologies, as well as protection of marine ecosystems. The study pinpoints technological innovations, policy frameworks and management approaches to developing a low carbon port. The study examines global green port initiatives and sustainable practices to gain insights into the challenges and opportunities of implementing sustainable port operations. Results highlight the need for holistic approaches to energy and water-use management for creating resilient ports to support sustainable shipping and sustainable goals.
