Pakistan-Germany Economic Ties in The 21st Century

Abstract

The term of economic relationship between Pakistan and Germany in the 21st century is examined in this study and how Pakistan has moved from the traditional trade relationship to a wider strategic partnership. Germany is still Pakistan's biggest trading partner in the EU with bilateral trade valued at €3.3 billion in 2024. While labour-intensive industries like textiles, leather, surgical products and sports goods dominate Pakistan's exports, Germany's exports are more concentrated on machinery, chemical and pharmaceutical products required for the industrialization of Pakistan. One of the significant milestones was the EU GSP+ status granted to Pakistan in 2014, which gave Pakistan duty free access and led to a substantial increase in Pakistani exports to Germany. In addition to trade, German Foreign Direct Investment and development cooperation via GIZ and KfW have been involved in the fields of renewable energy, climate resilience, vocational training and infrastructure. Additionally, the study points to new opportunities for cooperation, such as in IT, the generation of green hydrogen, and technology transfer. The partnership has a good potential of sustainable development and growth in the fields of economy and innovations despite the governance, security and investment climate problems.
