Cognitive Artificial Intelligence in Education: Examining Its Influence on Students’ Cognitive Engagement, Learning Motivation, and Academic Performance

Abstract

The rapid integration of Cognitive Artificial Intelligence (AI) into higher education has created new opportunities for enhancing students’ learning experiences, yet its influence on cognitive engagement, learning motivation, and academic performance requires further empirical investigation, particularly within the Pakistani higher-education context. This study examined the influence of Cognitive Artificial Intelligence on students’ cognitive engagement, learning motivation, and academic performance. A quantitative, cross-sectional research design was used, and data were collected from 467 university and higher-education students from educational institutions in Punjab and Sindh, Pakistan. Data were collected through a structured, adopted questionnaire using an online Google Forms survey. The questionnaire assessed Cognitive Artificial Intelligence, cognitive engagement, learning motivation, and academic performance using established measurement approaches. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation, multiple linear regression, independent-samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and post-hoc analysis were employed to examine the study variables and group differences. The findings demonstrated significant positive relationships between Cognitive Artificial Intelligence and students’ cognitive engagement, learning motivation, and academic performance. Cognitive Artificial Intelligence also emerged as a significant predictor of these educational outcomes, while cognitive engagement and learning motivation were positively associated with academic performance. Significant differences were additionally identified across selected demographic groups. The study concludes that Cognitive Artificial Intelligence has considerable potential to support students’ cognitive involvement, motivation, and academic development when it is integrated into educational practices through appropriate pedagogical guidance and responsible use. The study contributes to the growing body of research on AI in education by providing empirical evidence from students in Punjab and Sindh and by examining cognitive, motivational, and academic outcomes within an integrated framework.
