Metaphorical Competence: A Critical Review from Definition to Conceptual Metaphor Theory

Abstract

Metaphorical competence has evolved as a pivotal construct in language studies and cognitive linguistics. It involves the ability to comprehend, interpret, and utilise metaphor as a fundamental facet of human communication. This article aims to provide a thorough review of existing literature on metaphorical competence. It seeks to trace its development from a basic definition to its theoretical foundation, known as “conceptual metaphor theory.” The paper aims to clarify its core ideas, highlight its significance, and evaluate different theoretical perspectives. As the study relies on existing literature, it applies a critical lens to assess and synthesise definitions, conceptual frameworks, and empirical findings. The study’s findings suggest that metaphorical competence is not merely limited to linguistic skill but extends to communication and cognition. Its importance lies in its role in meaning-making, discourse construction, and cultural integration. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of metaphorical competence as a means to broaden interdisciplinary applications in communicative contexts.
