Abstract

The textile and apparel sector was a major source of employment and industrial value but also generated substantial environmental pressure through predominantly linear production and consumption systems. This paper examined the integration of circular-economy principles and green-manufacturing technologies to support sustainable textile value creation. A qualitative systematic/narrative literature review was conducted using peer-reviewed studies and authoritative institutional publications covering circular economy, sustainable materials, textile recycling, cleaner production, life-cycle assessment, Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain, digital product passports, reverse logistics, and extended producer responsibility. The findings indicated that no single intervention achieved systemic sustainability. The most effective approach prioritized reduction, durability, repair, reuse, and remanufacturing before recycling, supported by life-cycle assessment and digital technologies. From the Pakistan and developing-economy perspective, resource constraints, fragmented supply chains, informal recovery, weak enforcement, financing gaps, and export-market pressures were identified as key challenges. The paper proposed an integrated framework connecting sustainable materials, eco-design, green and smart manufacturing, collection, sorting, reuse, remanufacturing, recycling, and renewed production. It concluded that circular textile innovation required coordinated participation from industry, workers, consumers, regulators, recyclers, technology providers, and communities.
